Celebrating last year’s achievements as well as this year’s resolutions

This is me with a few of my fellow Ledbury Harrier run leaders on Sunday 7 January just about to hold the first session of our annual Couch to 5K course. (No, I didn’t get the memo about wearing something high vis…)

It was 3°C and 9am but that didn’t deter the 22 people taking the course this year from turning up shortly after this photo was taken.

Every year, everyone starts the course absolutely convinced they won’t be able to run 5K. Every year, they prove themselves wrong. Every year, they look back in astonishment at how far they’ve come in such a short space of time.

At this time of year, it’s usual to look forward and plan your goals for the year ahead. I think it’s equally important to look back and celebrate what you’ve achieved in the year that’s just gone. Because, if you’re anything like me, your normal tendency is to march on to the next thing without giving yourself a pat on the back or the chance to take breath.

For me, my 2023 achievements were:

  • professionally: going back to basics to understand what my business does and why, then rebranding as Every Word to give the outside world a clearer idea of where I can make the most difference.
  • personally: going from never having swum in open water to completing a one mile open water swim in the Serpentine in London in just three months.

Have you taken the time to do this exercise? What were your achievements for 2023?
