Heroes and Villains
A page dedicated to my pet loves and pet hates.
Heroes
My favourite columnists
- Lynne Truss
- Lucy Mangan
- Jon Ronson
- Zoe Williams
Why? They use language and punctuation to create deliciously individual styles perfect for light hearted features. When you read them, you are torn between laughing out loud and being envious that they manipulate language so confidently.
My favourite marketing
Why? Everything they write is tailored to create quirky, individual, but trustworthy brands. And nothing is left to chance. Next time you pick up an Innocent smoothie bottle, for example, look at the ingredients list. That alone lets you know which brand you’ve picked up – and the chances are, it will make you smile too.
Villains
I think every writer has pet hates. Here are some of mine.
- Inappropriate capital letters in the middle of a sentence. It only really works in Winnie the Pooh.
- &s in the middle of a sentence. (What’s wrong with ‘and’? It would be quicker to type too.)
- Abbreviations being used where there was enough space to use the full word.
- the strapline “for all your [insert product] needs” – such a cliché and not even a very good one!
